Platinum is the heaviest of precious metals, almost twice as heavy as 14 carat gold, but its real appeal is in its enduring bright white colour. Platinum doesn't tarnish and maintains its natural colour throughout its life, making it the perfect choice for an exclusive heirloom piece of jewellery. At 95% pure, platinum is also hypo-allergenic.
The word Onyx is derived from the Greek word onux, meaning nail or claw. Legend has it that while Venus slept, Eros cut her fingernails, scattering the clippings on the ground. The gods, decreeing that no part of a goddess should be allowed to die, turned the fingernails into Onyx stones. Onyx gemstones come in a wide range of natural colours and shades, often with lines of white, beige, and brown. We use Black Onyx, which is a semi-precious stone found largely in Brazil and also in Uruguay, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, India and Madagascar. In India, Onyx is thought to calm chaos, cure absentmindedness and temper the ardours of love. Used by the Romans, it was an extremely popular choice for carving into seals and cameos. Onyx is also mentioned in the Bible at various points, such as in Genesis 2:12 "and the gold of that land is good: there is bdellium and the onyx stones. As such, the Black Onyx is considered the preferred stone for rosaries.
The 14mm x 12mm face is our best-selling gentleman's size, the 16mm x 13mm is for larger hands and the 12mm x 10mm would suit a lady's hand or a slender gentleman's little finger. Our 11mm x 9mm face size is specially designed for smaller hands. These measurements refer to the overall face size, rather than just the stone.
Deep seal engraving
Traditional deep seal engraving is the most popular method of engraving signet rings. We create your design by carving deeply into the metal, hand engraving the design in reverse.
Once the seal engraving is completed, we use the engraved signet ring to produce a 3d wax impression - the seal. Your ring will arrive presented in a beautiful gift box, with an encapsulated impression of your design and a wax taper to make your own seals. If you would prefer for us to engrave your design as it is seen on paper, i.e. not in reverse, please let us know by using the comment box found in your shopping bag. read less
Surface cut engraving
As with seal engraving, surface engraving is produced by hand, using handheld gravers. In fact, it's the same technique used by traditional bank note engravers.
Unlike seal engraving, we don't carve deep into the metal - instead, we create the design by cutting hundreds of lines of varying widths and depths until the design comes to life. This method is ideal for cufflinks and it also looks effective on signet rings, but does not have the same longevity as seal engraving. read less
